The Homework Quiz
This week I was introduced to a great new (to me) idea; the homework quiz. This may be one of the simplest, fastest, most effective methods for ensuring completed homework.more
The idea is simple; a homework quiz asks a student to copy their answers for some selected problems to the quiz sheet. This allows a teacher to see not only if they have done their homework, but also to spot check their success. Since it is a quiz, the grading category is usually weighted, so students are likely to view it as more important than “just homework.” Students also should realize that they can get more points for the same amount of work. Both should lead to a higher amount of finished homework when the class begins.

That sounds like a good idea, how well has it worked thus far?

Well, we have only had it twice so far, so it is really too soon to tell. There was a noticable improvement the next day though.

Another good concept is to have them write an answer to a question that you put in on the board from the previous lesson in that subject. The students than have to write that in their journal and it gets handed in for a grade based off of their answer from that previous days notes—-if that all makes sense. Good luck!
